10 essential questions to ask your bridal hairstylist.

So you have found a hairstylist that is available on your wedding date, but do they tick all the boxes? Here are some great questions to ask to make sure they are the right fit for you. Make sure you read the bonus number 11 question its, a great tip!
1. Do you have a portfolio of your work?
Why you should ask- In terms of bridal hair questions to ask, this is a crucial one. You’ll want to have references of their past work to get a feel for their style and ability, especially if you have a different or challenging hair texture. Seeing their portfolio will give you a good idea of whether or not the hairstylist can work with your hair type.
2. Will you bring your own products and tools, or will I be responsible for supplying them?
Why you should ask- Most hairstylists will bring a kit with them containing all of the essentials they need to style your hair on the day. But if they won’t, you’ll want to know early on. Having to supply tools and products could end up costing a lot more and eating in to your budget. If you prefer to use your own tools and products, communicate this with your stylist I am sure they will be happy to accommodate.
3. Will my chosen style suit my hair type?
Why you should ask- It's great having big ideas about your hair and you will want to choose a stylist that knows how to create that look. That stylist may need to add in extensions or hair pieces to help with the style. It may be that the style you have chosen just is not going to work with your hair and you will need to know that from the get go.
4. Do you charge by the hour or per person?
Why you should ask- Every hairstylist prices their work a bit differently. Before you pay your deposit, have a clear understanding of the packages they may offer and what’s included in each one. Ask if you can have a breakdown in the cost in case you would like to add more services. You’ll also want to know how they would like to be paid and when the money is due. The more you know about the logistics of paying them ahead of time, the smoother the day will be.

5. How many weddings do you do in one day? (Will mine be the only one, or will you have to get to another wedding or event?)
Why you should ask- Get a sense of their schedule for that day so you don’t feel like they have to scramble to finish your hair. If your stylist is only preparing your hair for the ceremony, it might not be a problem if they’re working multiple weddings in one day. But if you want your hairstylist there for the ceremony and the reception, make sure they’re available to block out the whole day just for you. This could be extra so make sure you ask.
6. Will I have to travel to you or can you come to my venue?
Why you should ask- Not all hairstylists will travel to you some may ask you to travel to their salon or studio. You should consider how far the salon is from where you’ll be getting dressed and determine if it will work in your wedding day schedule. You definitely don’t want to be rushed the morning of your big day.
7. How long will my hairstyle take?
Why you need to ask- Knowing the time each style will take will help you manage your day. Don’t forget to account for your bridal party as well. Your hair will take the longest, so give yourself at least 1 hour with your hairstylist and at least half hour for each bridesmaid. This can change depending on style, but that’s usually a good guide. You should also be the last person to have your hair done so yours is the freshest, you’re the bride after all.
8. How much experience do you have?
Why you need to ask- A wedding morning takes a lot of organizing and time management, you want to make sure your stylist has the experience under their belt. If your stylist has styled plenty of wedding mornings they can help you plan yours and help it run smoothly. If you have decided to go with someone new make sure you are not over paying, prices should reflect their experience.
9. Will you provide a trial run before the wedding?
Why you need to ask- Chances are the trial will be your first time assessing their skills in person. Provide them with reference images and bring any bridal headpiece (veil, tiara, clips) you plan to wear on your wedding day. Make sure you know the cost of your trial, find out if they charge extra for the service.
10. What will happen if you’re ill or have an emergency on the wedding day?
Why you need to ask- This may be last on the list of bridal hair questions to ask, but it’s so important. If your hairstylist has to cancel on short notice, there should be a contingency plan. Will they provide another stylist, a refund or will their assistant take their place? If they have a backup hairstylist, will you be able to meet them beforehand?
11. Bonus one! Can we face time?
Now they tick all the boxes and you don't want to miss out on your wedding date. See if you can schedule a face time chat, this is a great way to get to know your stylist and run through a few things before you put your deposit down. This then takes off the pressure from your trial and you can book this in closer to the wedding date.
